Seeing Stars
From page 192: "I figured he was one of the kingpins, because everyone was kowtowing to him, holding his coat and backing up to give him room."
I think it means to, like, respect someone. Because it said "...and backing up to give him room." So, they were respecting him and giving him proper attention.
I think that it means that they do more than respect him they are doing unasked things like holding his coat so i dont agree as much with you guys because what i would get is that it means that they are praising him because they are intimidated.
