Knuckling Under
Please reread the first two paragraphs on page 143, looking up definitions of any words you need to, and then explain what you think this means: "Now, with Mr. Riley absent from the store, the breach widened and the shady world of his rum-running operations began to encroach directly on my father's pristine territory."

I think it means that the rum-running business has started to come into Mr. Hart's life and that he is getting pulled into the rum-running business
ReplyDeleteOne of the words that I, too, didn't know, was "buffer". Buffer means a sort of a bumper usually seen on vehicles. The next on was "enroach" which means to trespass on someones property.
ReplyDeleteThe first one is the word 'buffer' which means a bumper usually on machines. The other one was 'encroach' which is when you trespass on someones property or rights. I think that sentence means that because Mr. Riley got arrested, people might think that Ruben's father might have been involved in the rum-running thing.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I think that that means that with Mr. Riley gone, the rum-runners will try to trespass right onto his property... maybe.
ReplyDeleteI think that it means Mr.Riley is sort of getting pulled into the rum-running business, because of being in charge of the store.
ReplyDeleteI think it means that in the time that Mr. Riley isn't there that the other people that do the rum running will not know where to unload.
