Knuckling Under

Please reread the first two paragraphs on page 143, looking up definitions of any words you need to, and then explain what you think this means: "Now, with Mr. Riley absent from the store, the breach widened and the shady world of his rum-running operations began to encroach directly on my father's pristine territory."

  1. I think it means that the rum-running business has started to come into Mr. Hart's life and that he is getting pulled into the rum-running business

  2. One of the words that I, too, didn't know, was "buffer". Buffer means a sort of a bumper usually seen on vehicles. The next on was "enroach" which means to trespass on someones property.

  3. The first one is the word 'buffer' which means a bumper usually on machines. The other one was 'encroach' which is when you trespass on someones property or rights. I think that sentence means that because Mr. Riley got arrested, people might think that Ruben's father might have been involved in the rum-running thing.

  4. Oh, and I think that that means that with Mr. Riley gone, the rum-runners will try to trespass right onto his property... maybe.

  5. I think that it means Mr.Riley is sort of getting pulled into the rum-running business, because of being in charge of the store.

  6. I think it means that in the time that Mr. Riley isn't there that the other people that do the rum running will not know where to unload.
